RWANDANS IN SYDNEY MARKS KWIBUKA 32
Sydney, 9 May 2026 - Rwandans, friends of Rwanda, community leaders, and well-wishers gathered at Australian Catholic University (ACU) in Sydney to mark the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The event featured candle-lighting tributes, wreath-laying, and a minute’s silence to honour the victims and stand in solidarity with survivors.
Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Innocent B. Muhizi underscored the urgent need to combat genocide ideology, denial, and division, cautioning that these harmful narratives continue to evolve and spread across modern platforms, including social media.
Amon Aruho, Chairman of the Rwanda Community Abroad (RCA) in New South Wales, highlighted the broader significance of commemoration. Echoing High Commissioner Muhizi’s message, Aruho issued a clarion call for collective responsibility to confront hatred, denial, and genocide ideology, and to ensure that such atrocities never occur again.

A documentary tracing Rwanda’s journey from the devastation of the genocide to its remarkable reconstruction was screened, offering powerful insights into the country’s resilience and progress.
Genocide survivor Omar Ndizeye, author of “Life and Death in Nyamata”, delivered a moving testimony, providing a deeply personal perspective on the events and their lasting impact.
