KWIBUKA 29 MARKED IN SINGAPORE: HIGH COMMISSIONER URGES PARTICIPANTS TO FIGHT GENOCIDE DENIAL
On Friday 7th April 2023, High Commissioner Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye urged members of the Rwandan Community Abroad (RCA) in Singapore and Indonesia to contribute to fighting denial and revisionism of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
High Commissioner Uwihanganye made this call during an event to mark the 29th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Tens of RCA members in Singapore and their families attended the event physically while RCA members in Indonesia, mainly comprised of university students, joined in virtually.
In his speech, High Commissioner Uwihanganye noted: “…the gains made [post-genocide] are increasingly under threat due to continued genocide ideology and denial circulated by génocidaires and their apologists, on different platforms including on social media”.
“I urge everyone here present, especially the young, to do their bit to counter those accounts which, unabated, could plunge our country back into the abyss. Equally, you shouldn’t fall victim to such extremists or lend credence to their narratives”. High Commissioner Uwihanganye added.
He further noted that the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi left survivors with both physical and psychological scars and urged everyone be close to them and reach out to them particularly during the period of commemoration.
